A biopsy involves the removal of just a small portion of affected tissue to test. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading, doctors can remove the tumors. They can also provide an option for curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has advanced. The reason for this is that the tumors can become resistant to certain treatments and can recur. The doctor might recommend the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the outlook of a patient.
